Ep.60 How business can turn in an adventure - with Helen Christopher
Show notes
Helen Christopher is a former elementary school teacher turned hospitable host and wedding venue owner in Upstate New York. In 2021, she bought a former girls summer camp called Borookledge, which offers guests 60-acre cabins, glamping space and event space. As owner, she helps guests reconnect with nature and disconnect from their hectic lives. Helen has been featured in the Times Union, Ramble and Roam blog, and podcasts. She is also a co-author of the book Hospitable Hosts 2. She now lives with her family and her 2 dogs in what was once the nurse's office in Brookledge and enjoys camp life every day.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Why Helen lost having fun teaching children, although she used to love her job
- How a real estate license led Helen and her family to move to a campsite
- Helen is speaking about struggles and obstacles despite living and working on a soul project
Quotes:
"When I went to college, I was super excited and I quickly graduated with my master's and found a job right away and I really enjoyed it. I love the children. I love the creativity. But then I was noticing, um, that it was starting to lose its fun. It wasn't, I wasn't having the ability to be as creative as much the teaching world has changed a lot, uh, during that, that time that I was a teacher."
"So within two weeks, we put our house on the market and we moved right on to the Brookledge property. And then we started renovating it and turning it into a business."
"And there was a void. So for that reason, I was looking to do something else that would fill that void. I believe that the hospitality industry, you know, helping people create these memories was exactly what I was looking for."
