Ep.86 Why personal Branding Wins
Show notes
Host Ivana Ivanek argues that personal branding is essential for small business owners who want to succeed in the future, because people choose who they feel aligned with even when products, prices, and reviews are the same. She addresses common concerns about social media and explains that consistency is simple but difficult because it requires showing up on hard days.
From Curaçao, she shares how a long-time volunteer known as “Kunukuman” built a trusted brand over 20–25 years of weekly island cleanups; a well-funded couple then launched a large recycling initiative under his name, allowing the project to gain traction quickly.
Ivana concludes that personal brands create belonging, trust, and flexibility to pivot offers, and she promotes her Magnetic Influence Accelerator program for building visibility and a personal brand strategy beyond trends and constant posting.

00:00:27: The beauty of all these is that no matter how saturated a market is, there's only one you and therefore you have the chance to stand out in those markets.
00:00:42: Welcome to the online business by design podcast!
00:00:45: I'm your host Ivana Ivonek and this is your mindset and marketing podcast burning out.
00:00:54: And most importantly, enjoying your business journey while you are making money and impact.
00:01:00: Grab your favorite note-taking device lean back and get inspired.
00:01:05: I believe that everything you need to build a business of your dreams at the extraordinary life You can't stop thinking about is already within it.
00:01:14: It's simple as this two people sell The same product or service for the same price in the same market,in the same region.
00:01:27: Who would you pick?
00:01:29: who do we choose ?
00:01:30: let's also say they have the same reviews ,the same good reviews approximately the same length of program etc...who does your choice Exactly!
00:01:44: The person you are drawn to, the person who has a cause.
00:01:48: You feel drawn too?
00:01:50: A person speaking on topic where you feel seen so much more beyond that product or service.
00:02:01: And I wanna have one word with YOU on this.
00:02:05: If you're overthinking it already and you're thinking to yourself like do I really want to be on social media?
00:02:12: Do i REALLY wanna deal with all that content creation stuff, do I REALLY wanna speak on podcasts...do I REALLY want to present my values.
00:02:24: And the cause I stand behind as a company publicly?
00:02:31: your thoughts are so legit.
00:02:33: believe me I have that too, although i'm so standing behind it.
00:02:37: I am enjoying what im doing.
00:02:39: sometimes life gets very busy and hard.
00:02:44: And then in your business or hardship you also need to be cute on social media.
00:02:55: If this is a concern, I so hear you.
00:02:58: But recently i did have a little small conversation short in my DMs on consistency and the reason why we are always misled because consistency being sold to us as something simple And if your not consistent then you're not it.
00:03:17: You don't have it ,you won´t succeed.
00:03:20: but how I see consistency Simple?
00:03:23: on one hand because it's just doing the same thing over and over again.
00:03:26: so this inevitable that you succeed but The hard thing is That You need to do It Over And Over Again, and that means On Hard Days, on Rainy days or on Tired Days.
00:03:39: On Days where?
00:03:40: Just don't feel it!
00:03:41: On Days Where you had a Difficult Conversation with your partner...on Days where you perhaps Had A few Glasses too much than the night before, whatever it is.
00:03:53: It's part of the game but equally rewarding and even that rewarding dance which also not new But I hear more often.
00:04:04: And now i have a story to bring you today.
00:04:07: That has happened right in front my eyes.
00:04:11: Companies are paying personal brains To represent their cause and are operating under the personal brand, which is different than influencers.
00:04:26: It's different from being an influencer on social media or selling someone's product.
00:04:31: but these companies because they are not known for that cause or don't have a wide audience as the personal brand has and therefore, they're paying them so they can grow new business under their name.
00:04:48: This is so freaking cool!
00:04:53: So yeah... Personal branding matters And whatever you over thinking You feel the pull non-the less.
00:04:58: go do it Because this going to be mind blowing what I'm gonna tell right now.
00:05:04: So, hello from the Caribbean!
00:05:07: From Curacao.
00:05:07: As you know I moved here...I absolutely love it here.
00:05:12: but then more i dig into society culture The more I call this place my home..the more people I meet It becomes obvious that yeah, Curacao is an island and every Island has a issue.
00:05:28: And the biggest issue we are having here is trash waste Recycling.
00:05:36: So, first of all there is very little awareness around recycling and secondly what happens with the recycled trash?
00:05:45: Because it's only getting more on the island!
00:05:48: And so far an islands have a very hard time with that.
00:05:52: no one has succeeded here to really tackle the problem.
00:05:55: I mean REALLY tackle it on scale.
00:06:00: There are small recycling companies that can recycle only one type of plastic, they made jewelry out it.
00:06:06: there is a certain amount of glass that's being recycled and reused on the island but its minimal.
00:06:14: this problem needed huge structure behind.
00:06:20: so what was happening over last twenty to twenty five years?
00:06:26: I met this man so often because i was collaborating with him, with other companies where i was engaged in marketing their events and fundraisers etc.
00:06:41: .I met these men so often but i never asked for his real name.
00:06:46: So Konuku Manu is the brand And over the last twenty to twenty five years he was engaged making the island trash-free was collecting trash every single Sunday at between ten a.m.. And two p.m in the different region of the island Recycled it and then got rid off it.
00:07:12: He got known for it.
00:07:14: so his cause was wanting to keep the Island clean, he was repeating Over and over again for twenty years, voluntarily.
00:07:25: He has never been paid.
00:07:26: eventually he got known in the government donated him a car And supported etc.
00:07:31: but at the beginning it was there standing alone with few people.
00:07:35: Also the volunteers are now changing The groups of getting bigger.
00:07:39: It's just really exciting A very big thing that happened here on the island.
00:07:46: That one man can have such an impact but it's only one man and his volunteers, so... And this one man has no idea how to build a business.
00:07:58: How to run the business.
00:07:59: nor is he really interested in it because He never wanted to make money out of this.
00:08:04: It was His personal want that what he wanted to contribute The legacy he wanted leave behind.
00:08:12: But eventually there was enough attention.
00:08:16: There wasn't an audience.
00:08:18: he has spilled after twenty to twenty-five years repeating the same thing and then it happened.
00:08:26: He met a couple, this couple is running companies but they have nothing to do with recycling or yeah many ways recycling... Nothing!
00:08:40: They are doing something completely different on a cleanup tour, on a Sunday between ten AM and two PM as they were on vacation.
00:08:51: And they got hooked on it and said yeah we have the money ,we can make an investment.
00:08:55: We love the island so much that we want to contribute and help.
00:09:02: put this whole recycling issue under an umbrella build a company which actually takes care of not just recycles but also gets the trash off the Island.
00:09:14: And after that conversation it happened.
00:09:18: The fact is, although the company has enough money to make an investment they have invested over a million US dollars on this project.
00:09:32: but how do you start?
00:09:33: Nobody knows them!
00:09:35: There's no awareness really for trash and recycling.
00:09:39: now someone comes in like oh we're making these companies No one freaking cares but what they had, the head kunukuman.
00:09:49: They already have someone who has built a brand and name for over two decades.
00:09:58: And now they agreed to start this project under Kunukuman's name.
00:10:04: and so lately his name.
00:10:08: I was at opening of first recycling stations.
00:10:12: I was at a few meetings out of curiosity to see what they're exactly doing and how companies, resorts, apartments restaurants on the island are involved not just in local community.
00:10:26: And this project took off overnight because there were someone who had already known some one's name.
00:10:36: all that it needed is money in the future.
00:10:45: Because having a personal brand is powerful, it's so powerful that beyond money you can make and product or service no matter how good they are behind every person brand is real human being even if its online world after covid when we have Lost a little bit of connection to humanity.
00:11:16: We want to be more in solitude.
00:11:19: we prefer two.
00:11:21: what's app?
00:11:22: Over calling people.
00:11:24: it just something happened to us over the last few years and I'm seeing you don't social media right now, I'm saying everywhere Humanity wants to reconnect with humanity And this is where the personal brand does because it connects With some thing that we all are seeking, which is belonging.
00:11:47: And having that asset... Having built a community, a fan club that belongs and believes in you what your bringing out there is so much stronger than just an offer.
00:12:05: It is so much stronger because it brings something to the world.
00:12:09: To each individual, not only the buyers and consumers.
00:12:14: but you are making people think differently on a global scale And that has power!
00:12:22: It has the power... ...to start a company!
00:12:25: It's got the power of failing companies again Because they're still YOU And I hope if anything is not going your way, If things are going astray that you will start over again.
00:12:37: A personal brand has the power That You can today sell a t-shirt to moral a coffee mug and in a year a service or coaching program Because YOU have a fan club that loves you!
00:12:51: This fan club so broad & wide because it's like part of whole world... ...that believe me within that community you will find the right people who will buy from you because they know, love and trust.
00:13:09: And even if you are considering having a podcast making music whatever it is your music or podcasts but ever your big ideas to bring into their world becomes just so much more powerful human being.
00:13:33: Think of Kunukuman, think that whole recycling issue which was resolved overnight because there is a name and thats powerful my friend!
00:13:46: So lets go back to the beginning.
00:13:48: if you are considering it or overthinking it then its so much more difficult building your personal brand than hiding behind a logo.
00:14:00: but you are here for more.
00:14:03: You're here to leave something behind, and make people think differently... YOU ARE HERE TO SHOW THEM WHAT'S POSSIBLE FOR THEM!
00:14:12: To show them the things they couldn't have imagined.
00:14:15: And yes it is hard work might be different harder than other things But if you feel pulled then you feel a calling too.
00:14:23: do so.
